Transgender Service Members to Stay in Military … For Now

Caitlyn Jenner, one of the most prominent transgender figures in America, slammed President Trump on Wednesday for barring transgender people from serving in the military. "It just hurts", said the veteran.

Local LGBTQ leaders and political experts are weighing in after President Donald Trump tweeted Wednesday morning announcing that transgender people will be banned in the nation's military.

"We already have qualified and trained transgender troops who are ready to serve their country".

He also said that the military "cannot be burdened with the tremendous medical costs" of transgender people anymore. "I would love for my President to meet me, so I can tell him about the 15,500 honorably serving transgender military members that are fighting right now for their liberties and for their country".

Meanwhile, hundreds of transgender people took to the streets in Times Square to protest against Trump's latest controversial ban, reported Reuters. "There will be no modifications to the current policy until the President's direction has been received by the Secretary of Defense and the Secretary has issued implementation guidance".

Trump's ban, posted to Twitter Wednesday rather than any formal announcement, drew bipartisan denunciations and threw now serving transgender soldiers into limbo. "I would like that one word, disruptive, elaborate on it. Tell me what you think is going to be disruptive 'cause I don't see how it could be", DeCarlo said. When Trump announced via the social media site that the military would no longer allow transgender people to serve, Zabel couldn't help but take personal offense to the claim.

It's unclear what role the Pentagon played in Trump's decision to bar transgender war fighters from serving.

Demonstrator Yael Leberman says transgender people "are completely adequate to serve" and combat is "not about physical, it's about mental" abilities. "What happened to your promise to fight for them?"

Brewer said military families she knows are eager to know how Trump's three tweets affect their lives.

Trump's action drew an immediate rebuke from a leading group supporting transgender rights and lawmakers who had favored last year's policy change. As a transgender Air Force veteran, Zabel knows all too well the impact a change in policy like this could have, and also how hypocritical an attempt to pass this off as being for the good of the military is.

"Haven't transgender people gone through enough?" Upon revoking the directive, Trump invoked states' rights and said public schools should be able to establish their own decisions regarding the issue. "There's an estimate that there's over 7,000 transgender individuals now serving in the military", Hopkins stated.
