Turkey police detain Amnesty director and 12 other rights activists

Turkey police detain Amnesty director and 12 other rights activists

"If anyone was still in doubt of the endgame of Turkey's post-coup crackdown, they should not be now", Amnesty's Shetty said.

The Turkish government on Wednesday arrested nine members of the human rights group Amnesty International, charging them with being members of a terrorist organization.

Amnesty International's Secretary General Salil Shetty described the accusations against the 10 people, who were attending a workshop on digital security and information management, as absurd.

The seven rights activists arrested with Ms Eser on Wednesday evening were named as: Ilknur Ustun of Women's Coalition; Gunal Kursun and Veli Acu of Human Rights Agenda Association; Nalan Erkem and Ozlem Dalkiran of Citizens Assembly; Nejat Tastan of Equal Rights Watch Association and lawyer Seyhmus Ozbekli. The whereabouts of those detained is now unknown.

"The absurdity of these accusations against Idil Eser and the nine others can not disguise the very grave nature of this attack on some of the most prominent civil society organizations in Turkey", the group's secretary general, Salil Shetty, said.

Amnesty International says other world leaders have been "remarkably tolerant of Turkey's human rights meltdown".

"I call on the Turkish authorities to recognise and respect the crucial role that NGOs, including Amnesty International, play in a functioning, democratic society".

Their arrests come less than a month after the arrest of Taner Kiliç, chair of Amnesty International Turkey, and 22 other lawyers in Izmir in June. "More voices, not fewer, are necessary in challenging times".

The Turkish government has been conducting a year-long crackdown following last July's failed coup attempt. They are republished from a number of sources, and are not produced by MintPress News.
