US Military Plane Crashes In Mississippi, 16 Dead

The Marine Corps said it had sent an explosive disposal team to the scene as a precaution.

The KC-130T Hercules transport aircraft disappeared from air traffic control radar over MS around 5 p.m. Monday, the Marine Corps said in a statement, after it departed from the Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point in North Carolina. Initial reports were unclear as to who owned the aircraft, first identified only as a C-130 Hercules.

A U.S. Marine Corps KC-130 Hercules aerial tanker has crashed in rural Mississippi.

Sen. Thom Tillis (R-NC), chair of the Senate Armed Services subcommittee on personnel, also issued a statement on the accident.

President Trump on Tuesday extended his condolences after a Marine Corps airplane crash Monday left 16 people dead.

A witness to Monday's crash, Andy Jones, said he heard a loud bang while working in a field near his catfish farm. "It was spinning down".

She said the plane crashed along County Road 547, which connects acres of farmland between the towns of Itta Bena and Moorhead.

Marine Corps Maj. Andrew Aranda, speaking during a press conference Tuesday morning, said numerous Marines were from a unit based in Newburgh, New York with active duty and reserve members.

Jones said a man borrowed his cellphone to report to authorities that there were bodies across U.S. Highway 82, more than a mile from the crash site.

Firefighters have told local media they had been forced back from the wreckage on several occasions due to "high intensity" explosions.

Large plumes of smoke were visible for miles across the region, with the fire continuing to burn for more than four hours after the crash.

Earlier, officials said they had found 12 bodies in the soybean field where the flight crashed and were searching for others. Equipment on board included various small arms ammunition and personal weapons.

President Donald Trump offered his condolences early Tuesday, tweeting "Marine Plane crash in MS is heartbreaking".

Citing the Federal Aviation Administration, WSOC-TV in Charlotte reported that the flight had originated from Cherry Point, in the state of North Carolina, home to a Marine Corps air base.

The station was authorized by Congress just before the start of World War II and trained units and individual Marines for the Pacific theater of the war.
