US 'Successfully' Conducts THAAD Defense System Test

U.S. forces carried out a missile interception system test on Sunday, a military agency said.

It said this was the 15th successful intercept in 15 tests for the weapons system known as THAAD, which stands for Terminal High Altitude Area Defense.

"A medium-range target ballistic missile (MRBM) was air-launched by a U.S. Air Force C-17 over the Pacific Ocean".

"Notwithstanding effectively catching the objective, the information gathered will enable MDA to upgrade the THAAD weapon framework, our displaying and reenactment capacities, and our capacity to remain in front of the advancing risk", said MDA Director Lt. Gen. Sam Greaves in an announcement.

THAAD is not created to intercept intercontinental ballistic missiles, like the one North Korea tested for the second time Friday, but it is an excellent defensive tool when it comes to short-, medium-, and intermediate-range ballistic missiles.

"The whole USA mainland" is now within reach, state media quoted North Korean leader Kim Jong Un as saying.

Each THAAD system is comprised of five major components: interceptors, launchers, a radar, a fire control unit and support equipment, according to Lockheed Martin, the security and aerospace company that serves as the prime contractor.

The Department of Defense has released video footage of Sunday's test of a USA missile defense system.

Moscow and Beijing, in a joint statement, called on Washington to immediately halt deployment of THAAD in South Korea after North Korea's test earlier this month.

Following Pyongyang's missile launch, South Korea and the United States carried out a round of combined ballistic missile drills.

While Washington continues its military pressure, it has also asked China to pressure North Korea economically to cut off its access to foreign currency.

U.S. President Donald Trump criticized China and his predecessors Saturday night on Twitter.

He assured that the US will take all necessary steps to ensure the security of the American homeland and protect its allies in the region.

South Korea President Moon Jae-in has called for talks with the USA on deploying more anti-missile defense units in the region, and Seoul is speeding up the deployment of four additional THAAD defense system, reports said. China has dramatically increased its sphere of influence over the region in recent years by expanding its Naval forces across man-made islands that span large parts of the South China Sea.
