Varun Dhawan And Other Celebrities Support Campaign Against Lynchings In the Country

We have no doubt in saying that monster of terror will continue to haunt our region, if the United States did not shun its double standards on the matter. One man, who was held for the violence told NDTV he was "told by his friends to attack the Muslim boys because they ate beef".

Meanwhile, four men including a Delhi government employee were arrested Wednesday for last week's murder.

The protests were attended by people from all walks of life, including youngsters, who expressed their displeasure over growing intolerance in India.

In most cases, the issue of cows has been the proximate cause - allegations of cow slaughter, smuggling, eating or even possessing beef. Additionally, Hindu extremists groups often use violence to protect the bovines and punish those who eat beef. In May, two young Muslim men in Assam were killed allegedly on the suspicion that they were stealing cows.

However, Muslims are not the only ones being targeted by cow vigilantes.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who earlier hailed the country's diversity in his speech on the occasion of the Muslim festival, did not utter a word about this or any of the public lynchings over the last couple of years. State police soon started closing down butcher shops over suspected slaughter of cows. Grieving the Muslim lynchings, thousands of worshippers marked the end of the holy month of Ramadan wearing black armbands during the special prayers as a mark of solidarity with the victims of the religious hate crime. Pratik Gurunath, a school teacher and an avid social media buff, says, "Social media is said to be a tool meant to connect us with the world".

It further alleged the attacks were part of a series involving assaults which go beyond minorities and Dalits and Adivasis were also attacked. Protests were also being held in 15 other cities as well as in London, protest organiser Saba Dewan said. "It can lead to problems", said Jamal Khan, a farmer in the northern state of Haryana.

In many cases that caused extensive protests, like the lynching of Akhlaq in Dadri in 2015 or the stripping and beating of dalit youths in Una, Gujarat in 2016, the central and state government's response was perceived to be delayed and tepid.

"I return the award, which has lost all its credibility, in protest against the consistent attacks and killings of the members of the minority communities and total inaction, apathy and tacit support to the violent gangs by the government", said Hashmi.

According to a study by the IndiaSpend organization, cow vigilante attacks began in 2010, but have gotten much worse since Narendra Modi and the ruling BJP party came to power in 2014. Four Dalits in Gujarat were brutally beaten by cow vigilantes in August of a year ago for allegedly killing a cow, which later investigation revealed to have been killed by a lion.

"It is not the first time that we are listening this from him (Prime Minister Modi)". "Not many people attend such events, but I hope to see at least 100 today", he said.
