Bill Gates makes $6.28 billion pledge, his largest since 2000

Bill Gates makes $6.28 billion pledge, his largest since 2000

The transfer became publicly known on Monday via a document filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission. The second largest was made by Mr. (Warren) Buffett, who donated nearly $3.2bn to the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation last month.

The donation reduces Gates stake in the software maker to 1.3 percent.

Since June 2015, Gates has regularly donated eight million shares each quarter.

In 1999, Gates gave away $16 billion in Microsoft shares, and in 2000, $5.1 billion in shares, Bloomberg reports. While in 2000 he gave away $5.1 billion.

While the recipient of the gift wasn't specified, Gates has made the majority of his donations to the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the charity he and his wife use to direct their philanthropic efforts.

Gates' most recent pledge takes his overall charitable donations to approximately $50 billion, based on the foundation's most recent financial statement. Microsoft stock now accounts for just 9 per cent of his overall net worth, which stood at an estimated $85.2 billion, according to Forbes.

Bill Gates, the richest person in the world, is giving away more of his staggering wealth.

After the donation, Ben Silverman, research director at InsiderScore, told Bloomberg, "It's a change in how he distributes that asset".

Representatives for Microsoft and the Gates Foundation did not respond to Observer requests for comment. Before giving a large gift of 31 million shares in November of 2014, he was selling roughly 100 million shares per year.
