Bills trade Sammy Watkins and Ronald Derby

Bills trade Sammy Watkins and Ronald Derby

To say that what took place at One Bills Drive Friday afternoon was shocking would be a vast understatement.

Buffalo Bills fans probably would have preferred to see Sammy Watkins in bubble wrap sitting in a suite on Thursday night.

You read that correctly. He was a second-round pick (50th overall) in the 2015 draft. Buffalo also received a second round draft pick in the deal while giving up a sixth round pick. In losing his top passing target, the Bills are essentially setting up Taylor to fail this season. This, of course, is assuming the Bills don't hit rock bottom this season and won't have to worry about moving up in the draft to get one of the top QBs.

His career in Buffalo, however, was marked with injuries and disappointment. It was a reckless trade by former general manager Doug Whaley, and now it has proven to be a bad one, too. In three years, he played in just 37 out of a possible 48 games and was extremely inconsistent.

Their two leading returning receivers heading into 2017 are Tavon Austin (58 catches for 509 yards and 3 TDs) and running back Todd Gurley (43 receptions for 327 yards and no TDs).

Among current Rams receivers, Robert Woods was the most productive guy last season and he only had 613 yards on 51 catches.

He'll be an unrestricted free agent next year unless the Rams slap the franchise tag on him.

Watkins's future in Buffalo had already been in question after the Bills declined in May to pick up his fifth-year option. If Watkins doesn't stay healthy, this move could hurt in the long run.

The Bills' front office was boosted by an offseason regime change that saw first-year coach Sean McDermott get more say in personnel moves.

Darby was traded to the Philadelphia Eagles in exchange for wide receiver Jordan Matthews and the team's 2018 third round pick.

Matthews has been a steady performer in Philadelphia. He caught 28 passes for 430 yards and two scores in his injury shortened season previous year.

He had a solid rookie season in 2104, but was sidelined the 2015 season because of a foot injury. Watkins' absence will give also potentially allow rookie Zay Jones to step up and claim the first spot on the team's depth chart at receiver far earlier than anyone expected him to.
