Box-office eclipse: Hollywood has worst weekend in 16 years

Box-office eclipse: Hollywood has worst weekend in 16 years

The biggest factor that caused the halt is because an already slow August witnessed no major new releases last weekend.

Collider reports that THE HITMAN'S BODYGUARD has held on to its spot at the top of the box office for a second straight week. In fact, the combined gross of the top 12 movies was the lowest in 16 years, since September 2001.

The weekend will cap what's been a catastrophic summer for the movie business.

That would have been bad news for microbudget kung fu flick Birth of the Dragon. While much of this can be chalked up to Saturday's boxing match between Floyd Mayweather and Conor McGregor and Hurricane Harvey impacting the Texas markets, these numbers are still indicative of a rough few months for Hollywood. It earned only $2.5 million.

The film became the highest-grossing superhero origin movie ever made last week, likely sparking its second wind.

"Creation" for the second week in a row to take the number one spot at the North American box office this weekend, according to estimated figures released Sunday.

"It's a black eye for Hollywood but not a knock-out punch", said Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst for comScore. "Make no mistake about it, there was little foot traffic in theaters this weekend".

There have been lulls around this time in recent years. Creation continued to perform, with $7.3 million in estimated ticket sales. This year, the summer movie season is definitely going out like a lamb, with last weekend's victor The Hitman's Bodyguard beating out three new movies and a heavily-promoted fight screening in select theaters across the country, to take the top spot with just $10 million. Instead, mediocre offerings were largely to blame. The sequel has taken in about $77 million at the box office overall, which is more than five times what the horror film's budget. The Weinstein Company also nabbed the fourth position on the chart, with Tyler Sheridan's Wind River expanding to nationwide theaters. To put in perspective how paltry that is, Beauty and the Beast had an opening weekend of $175 million by itself earlier this year.

"Logan Lucky" and "Wind River" are now battling it out for fourth place. The film's $15 million two-week total, though, isn't the movie industry game-changer its makers hoped it would be. Where available, the latest worldwide numbers also are included.
