Captain Of Mexico National Team Sanctioned For Alleged Ties To Drug Kingpin

AP reported Marquez did not practice with Atlas on Wednesday. The sanctions are tied to a multi-year investigation into kingpin Raul Flores Hernandez's drug operation.

Marquez is one of 22 people to receive OFAC designation Wednesday for alleged involvement in the "Flores DTO", a drug trafficking ring led by Raul Flores Hernandez.

Marquez spent seven seasons at the Camp Nou between 2003 and 2010, making 240 appearances for the club and winning two Champions League titles in a hugely successful spell. Some of the entities sanctioned include the football club Club Deportivo Morumbi, a sports rehabilitation center, a music production company and Camelias Bar and Nocturnum Inc, which run bars and restaurants in Guadalajara.

Flores Hernandez allegedly operated independently in Guadalajara whilst maintaining alliances with other cartels.

Marquez is also renowned as one of the greatest players in the history of the Mexican national team.

According to the US Treasury, the move was "the largest single Kingpin Act action against a Mexican drug cartel network that the Office of Foreign Assets Control has designated", and comes following Donald Trump promise to crush Mexico's drug cartels. In March 2017, federal drug trafficking indictments were returned in the District of Columbia and the Southern District of California against Flores Hernandez.

A stint in MLS with New York Red Bulls followed, before he turned to play for Leon in 2013.

Marquez has made more than 140 appearances for the senior Mexican national team, and most recently played at the FIFA Confederations Cup in Russian Federation at the end of June and beginning of July.

Marquez's children's foundation was also linked to Flores Hernandez, though it also had a number of corporate sponsors.

Vigil said cartel figures have always been drawn to soccer stars and musicians. "They like these norteno singers, because these guys create ballads about their exploits and it adds to their legend, to the folklore".

The sanctions would freeze any assets that a blacklisted person or entity holds under United States jurisdiction and ban any U.S. individuals or companies from making business deals with them.
