Federer passes five-set test to advance at US Open

Federer passes five-set test to advance at US Open

One of the great rivalries in sport, Federer, a five-time US Open victor and Nadal, twice champion, have clashed 37 times over the years but never have they stood across the net on Flushing Meadows' hardcourts.

"Clearly he has nothing to lose but everything to gain", said the 36-year-old. "I believe this is going to give me great confidence in my game and my body". Honestly, if I had felt going into this tournament that my back was going to get worse every match, I probably wouldn't have played. "Extremely well, I wasn't here past year".

"I'm very happy how I'm feeling right now, how I felt coming off the court".

The match marked only the second time in the last 15 years that Federer was pushed to five in a Slam opener, and the first since Wimbledon 2010.

He will face either Slovenia's Blaz Kavcic or Mikhail Youzhny of Russian Federation on Thursday.

"I think I was also being a bit cautious with my movement". So that would have been tougher for me maybe to back it up back-to-back days. Maria Sharapova and Venus Williams were among the players set for second-round matches, while many others were still playing first-round matches that either didn't finish or couldn't even start Tuesday.

Built more like a boxer than a tennis player, Tiafoe possesses bruising power and no little swagger. "I think I did that, so I'm really, really excited that I won tonight".

The 19-time Grand Slam champion, who has already won the Australian Open and Wimbledon this year, was making only his second tournament appearance since beating Marin Cilic in south-west London in mid-July, and with fitness doubts lingering following his withdrawal in Cincinnati.

Meanwhile, in the opening night session encounter in the women's singles on Tuesday, American Madison Keys began her US Open campaign with a 6-3 7-6 (8-6) victory over world number 39 Elise Mertens.

Rafa Nadal starts his quest for a third US Open on 29 August 2017.

Be sure to join The Roar for live scores of this first round match from around 10:30am (AEST) or at the completion of Elise Mertens and Madison Keys on the Arthur Ashe Stadium and don't forget to add a comment below.
