Gorakhpur Hospital Deaths: It's Not Tragedy But Massacre, Says Satyarthi

Government sources said he failed to take prompt action even though those in charge of oxygen supply wrote a letter on Thursday, warning about the impending crisis. Raids have been conducted at the Lucknow-based firm which stopped supply of oxygen to the hospital.

An inquiry committee has been set up to ascertain the exact causes of the deaths and it has been asked to submit its report by tomorrow evening.

Speaking to ANI before leaving for Gorakhpur to look into the matter personally, Patel said, "The incident is very unfortunate and we are deeply saddened".

Contrary to this, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath yesterday outrightly blamed the principal for laxity in performing his duty.

Meanwhile, tragedy continued to descend upon Gorakhpur's Baba Raghav Das Medical College hospital, as another child succumbed to encephalitis today, taking the death toll over 70.

The opposition has cornered the Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP) government in the state demanding resignation from of Chief Minister Yogi Aditynath and Health Minister Siddharth Nath Singh on the moral grounds following the tragedy that has exposed the apathy of the failed medical system. What is shocking to know is that the oxygen supply department in the hospital had already warned about shortage.

Neonatal and encephalitis wards are reported most deaths.

At least a dozen children are said to have died from encephalitis - a disease causing inflammation of the brain, common during India's monsoon season and which is often caused by contaminated food, water or mosquito bites.

It is certain from the figures provided by the hospital that a majority of the deaths occurred on Thursday when oxygen supplies were disrupted. He was addressing a press conference on Sunday, 13 August along with federal Health Minister JP Nadda outside the hospital after inspecting the victims' families.

"It's a serious issue".

On Adityanath's assertion that the guilty would not be spared, Mayawati said it was a "hollow statement" as there is no action on ground.

"On August 10, at around 7:30 pm, supply of liquid oxygen became low... but the demand was met by oxygen cylinders. Yes, sixty patients have died at the hospital in the last five days but we don't think it's linked to reports of oxygen shortage", Anil Kumar, Gorakhpur's divisional commissioner said.
