HTC Vive Cuts Price by $200

HTC Vive Cuts Price by $200

HTC has made the first permanent price cut of its VR headset, the HTC Vive, just over a month after Facebook dropped the price of the Oculus Rift.

Of course, to run either system, you still need a fairly powerful computer, but with these latest price reductions, getting a VR platform from either manufacturer is not the bank breaker it used to be.

HTC has given its virtual reality headset - the Vive - a $200 (about Rs. 12,800) price cut in the United States, which brings the total cost down to $599 (about Rs. 38,400).

The company expects the current HTC Vive model to remain relevant in the VR market for the foreseeable future through the end of 2018. While the HTC Vive still costs more than the Rift or PSVR following the price drop, it is now within reach of a lot more potential VR gamers than it was before. It's important to remember, though, that Oculus has its own dedicated store for the Oculus Rift, so these figures may not be an accurate reflection of Vive's access share. This is despite the Oculus Rift launching with a more impressive lineup of games. "We think now is the right time to reset the price".

Llamas remarked that, additionally, big developer studio games such as Fallout 4 and DOOM are slated to arrive soon.

The $599 package will feature HTC Vive, Tilt Brush, Everest VR and Richie's Plank Experience with a free trial for Viveport.

Ignoring other available devices, such as the PlayStation VR or the Samsung Gear VR, the numbers do suggest that the Vive is the preferred brand for consumers seeking that high-end #virtual reality experience.

More content is also coming to Vive than ever before, which should attract more customers, according to a recent report from UBM Tech.

The Vive now has more than 3600 titles across Steam and Viveport and was recently found to be the most popular headset for VR game development.
