India restores hospital oxygen supply as anger mounts over child deaths

India restores hospital oxygen supply as anger mounts over child deaths

11 children died on August 12 and, until Friday, the death toll stood at 60.

Amidst 79 little children dying due to stop in oxygen supply, Uttar Pradesh chief minister, Yogi Adityanath, has a priority of his own.

The Uttar Pradesh Department of Information and Public Relations said that while governments in previous years had avoided grand celebrations of Janmashtami, they would now be revived.

Minister of State for Health Anupriya Patel and the Union health secretary will take stock of the situation in Gorakhpur, the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) said.

The government today admitted that oxygen supply was briefly disrupted on Thursday night, even as it maintained that none of the deaths reported at Gorakhpur's BRD Medical College in past five days was caused due to shortage of liquid oxygen.

"No one can be more pained by such deaths", Adityanath said, recalling how he had been fighting encephalitis since 1995-1996 and had seen thousands of children die due to AES. He also sought a probe by the Special Investigation Team into the matter.

Earlier, Congress spokesperson Manish Tiwari said the chief minister and UP's Health Minister Siddharth Nath Singh should resign taking "moral responsibility" for the deaths.

The shocking deaths in the Baba Raghav Das Medical College hospital of 63 children turned into a blame game as officials passed the buck on who was actually responsible for the deaths.

JD-U rebel MP Ali Anwar Ansari also condemned Kulaste's statement and demanded Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath over the incident that has shook the nation.

The Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has extended every possible aid. Babbar also demanded filing of criminal cases against those responsible for disruption of oxygen supply to the hospital due to non-payment of bills to the private suppler. "We are probing as to what caused the delay, " the official said.

The UP Congress yesterday termed the infant deaths in Gorakh-pur " murder" and deman-ded CM Yogi Adityanath's resignation. Adityanath, who had visited the hospital on August 9, said no issue of unpaid bills was brought to his attention and all requests for funds were met promptly.

Talking to media persons Mr Nadda announced that a regional medical research Centre will be established at Gorakhpur.
