Iran Allocates $520Mln for Missile Program in Response to New US Sanctions

Iranian MPs shouted "death to America" after Speaker Ali Larijani announced the result of the vote.

Iranian officials have repeatedly said Iran's missile program is for deterrent purposes.

The legislation is a reaction to a bill ratified recently in the US Senate allowing Washington to impose non-nuclear sanctions against Iran's missile program and its Revolutionary Guard (IRGC) force.

This legislation was described as an effort to "counter America's terrorist and adventurist actions in the region" and heralded as a justified response to new sanctions adopted by the United States earlier this summer.

Tensions between Tehran and Washington have grown since President Trump took office.

The countermeasures, which were approved by 240 Iranian lawmakers on Sunday, would see more money allocated to Iran's missile program as well as to the Quds Force, the Revolutionary Guards' extraterritorial operations branch, among other measures.

It would require Iran's government and armed forces to draw up a strategy to counter U.S. violations of human rights around the world, and to support Iranian bodies and individuals affected by USA sanctions.

He reminded members of parliament that the government backed the bill, which he said "was designed wisely so that it does not violate the (nuclear deal) and provide excuses for opposing sides", reported.

A second vote will now take place on the bill before it is submitted to a clerical body for final approval.

He was referring to a 2015 nuclear deal with world powers, known officially as the JCPOA, under which Iran agreed to strict limits on its nuclear programme in exchange for an easing of sanctions.

The US imposed sanctions after a ballistic missile test in January.
