Metro Detroit Man Among Sailors Missing At Sea After Navy Warship Collision

"Connie and I are thinking of Jacob's family during this terrible time, and we join Ohioans in praying for Jacob's well-being and safety". The bodies of seven USA sailors were found in a flooded berthing area after that collision.

Early Tuesday morning, the commander of the U.S. Pacific Fleet said some remains of Navy sailors were found in a compartment of the warship.

Swift also said that Malaysian authorities, one of three countries involved in the major hunt for the missing sailors who are feared dead, had also found a body.

The collision left a gaping hole in the destroyer's hull, flooding adjacent compartments including crew berths and machinery and communications rooms. A fifth injured sailor did not require further medical attention.

"Equipped with surface supplied air rigs, divers will access sealed compartments located in damaged parts of the ship". Swift says bodies were discovered but it's premature to say how many or the status of their recovery.

It's prompted the Navy to order a full investigation of the 7th Fleet's performance and readiness. No one was hurt in the first two incidents, but seven Navy sailors were killed in June in a collision between the USS Fitzgerald and a container ship off the coast of Japan.

The collision marks the fourth incident involving a US Navy warship in the Pacific this year. On May 9, the guided missile cruiser USS Lake Champlain was struck by a small fishing boat off the Korean Peninsula.

The navy said the body has been transferred to the frigate KD Lekiu and will be handed over to the USA navy on Wednesday.

"I've heard of these reports of potential cyberattacks or cyber interference ... we've seen no indications of that as of yet", he said.

The McCain, a guided missile destroyer, was about five miles off the coast of Malaysia and headed for routine port visit to Singapore when it collided Monday with the Liberian-flagged Alnic MC, a 600-foot oil and chemical tanker. Brandon says her son is a great kid and a hero. "That's the last update that we have". "I'm just ready for answers", she said.

It added that investigations into the cause of the Fitzgerald collision in June "shed some light on the way U.S. warships tend to sail without observing maritime traffic rules and the sloppiness of their crews". A 5th Sailor was evacuated after the ship got to port in Singapore.

Monday's collision was the fourth accident involving a United States warship this year.

John Richardson, the Navy's top admiral, called for an operational pause in the region and "a deeper look into how we train and certify forces operating in and around Japan", after the McCain's collision.
