National Football League suspends Cowboys RB Ezekiel Elliott 6 games

Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that Elliott has been suspended six games by the league as the result of their investigation into the accusations of domestic violence against him. The Columbus city attorney's office decided last September that Elliott wouldn't face charges.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport said Elliott would have three days to appeal against the suspension, which comes after a year-long investigation into multiple incidents involving last season's rookie sensation. While Elliott was never arrested or charged with domestic violence, the NFL's personal conduct policy empowers Commissioner Roger Goodell to impose penalties regardless of criminality, if a player is determined to have violated league rules. Any ruling would be considered binding. If his suspension is upheld before the regular season starts, he'd be added to the Cowboys' roster on Monday, Oct. 23, after Dallas' game against the San Francisco 49ers.

The former Ohio State Buckeye led the National Football League in rushing last season with 1,631 yards in addition to 15 touchdowns.

The NFL's press release regarding Elliott's suspension states that league advisors "were of the view that there is substantial and persuasive evidence supporting a finding that [Elliott] engaged in physical violence.on multiple occasions". Elliott will not be allowed into the Cowboys' training complex from whenever the suspension begins until it ends. The league cited photographs, medical information and thousands of electronic messages as evidence to back its decision to suspend Elliott, who led the NFL in rushing in 2016.

Elliott is expected to appeal the NFL's decision.

In March, he faced major backlash after a video surfaced, showing how he exposed a woman's breasts during the Dallas, Texas, St. Patrick's Day parade, without her consent.

The NFL Players Association adds they have been in contact with Elliott.
