That Time Frank Sinatra Secretly Reunited Jerry Lewis and Dean Martin

Family says Lewis died at his Las Vegas home of natural causes. He left a mark on many industry titans, including George Lucas and Jerry Seinfeld. He was also a writer and director. His parents were Jewish vaudeville performers who worked at resorts around New York City, according to the Washington Post.

"He had been slightly ill and spent some time in local hospitals, but came home and was planning on making stage appearances" in NY and Las Vegas, Candi Cazau, his publicist, confirmed on CNN.

Lewis rose to fame as goofy foil to suave partner Dean Martin and was a comic icon in France.

Over the next half-decade, Lewis appeared in some of the movies that he is still best known for today, including The Nutty Professor and It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World.

Lewis was also the father of a pop star: his sonGary Lewis fronted Gary Lewis & the Playboys, which scored '60s hits like "This Diamond Ring". Yet, the duo went separate ways after a farewell performance at the Copacabana in 1956, as Lewis's growing artistic aspirations strained their relationship.

A public falling-out ensued, after which Lewis starred in successful films on his own during the 1960s. Most notable from this period is 1963's The Nutty Professor, a variation on Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, which centered around a nerdy chemistry professor and his dark alter ego, a charming nightclub singer. Observers have attributed their breakup to Lewis' interest in producing and directing movies, his ego and need for control, as well as a desire for approval from the often-remote Martin. The partnership ended later that year, due to mounting tensions about Lewis's increasing popularity.

It was then that movie critics in France began hailing Lewis as an auteur and comedy genius, an idea at which many Americans scoffed.

"Jerry was a pioneer in comedy and film", his King of Comedy co-star, Robert De Niro, said in a statement. He continued to act late into his career; his last role was in the 2016 action film The Trust, at age 90.

He later led The Jerry Lewis MDA Labor Day Telethon for the Muscular Dystrophy Association, which ran for 44 years and raised roughly $2.5 billion.
