Transcript of Trump's Terrible January Call With Turnbull Leaks

Transcript of Trump's Terrible January Call With Turnbull Leaks

"I guarantee you they are bad". "I have been making these calls all day, and this is the most unpleasant call all day". "They are not going to be wonderful people who go on to work for the local milk people".

'And I am saying, boy that will make us look awfully bad, ' the transcript reads.

Although Trump called the refugee deal "dumb" in a February tweet, Vice President Mike Pence confirmed in April that the U.S. would be honoring the commitment to Australia "out of respect to this enormously important alliance".

Reports at the time of the February conversation, held shortly after the President's inauguration, claimed Mr Trump had said his conversation with Mr Turnbull was "the most unpleasant" of any he had with various world leaders.

"I hope so", Trump said.

"You can not say that to the press", Trump told Pena Nieto according to the transcript of the January 27 call published by the Post on Thursday.

The president complains that he "doesn't understand" why the deal is "so important" and seems to end the discussion abruptly. That is why they are in prison right now.

"Can you hear me out Mr President?" he said early in the call.

It started off ok, the pair chatting about mutual friend golfer Greg Norman "I guess our friend Greg Norman, he is doing very well?".

"I am the world's greatest person that does not want to let people into the country", Trump says.

"This is going to kill me", he said to Turnbull on January 27 during a conversation he described as "the worst call by far" during his nascent presidency, the Washington Post reported, citing a transcript.

According to transcripts of Mr Trump's call with Malcolm Turnbull obtained by The Washington Post, Mr Trump initially praised Australia for refusing to allow people arriving on boats to reach its shores.

Mr Trump: "How does that help you?"

Trump, however refused. The 24-minute call ended with Turnbull thanking Trump for his commitment.

The president went on to label the US refugee deal as "stupid" and claimed it would make him "look terrible" in his first week in the White House.

According to the transcript, on the phone with Turnball, Trump repeatedly talked about how bad it would look for him to issue an order restricting immigration then agree to take in "2,000 people that are actually imprisoned and that would actually come into the United States".

With an agreement over the refugee resettlement plan not forthcoming, Mr Trump was blunt in sizing up his exchange with Mr Turnbull.

Turnbull tries to appeal to Trump the dealmaker again: "But can I say to you, there is nothing more important in business or politics than a deal is a deal". The deal stated the US would prioritize families and children.

Mr Trump fired back: "It is important to you and it is embarrassing to me". Putin was a pleasant call. "I will be there again and again".

"I think it is a frightful deal, a disgusting deal that I would have never made", Trump added.
