Trump's favorability rating falls in three key states he won in 2016

In the 2016 election, Trump was the first Republican president since Ronald Reagan to carry all three of these Midwest states.

And six out of 10 in those three battleground states said Trump's recent conduct has "embarrassed" them, according to the polls taken after the violence at a white nationalist rally in Charlottesville, Va.

More than 60 percent of voters in three key states that helped Donald Trump win the presidency now say they are "embarrassed" by him. About 55%, 54% and 56% of voters, respectively, disapproved of Trump's work in the White House. In Michigan, only 36 percent approve of his job performance, 35 percent do so in Pennsylvania and 34 percent in Wisconsin.

An average of 64 percent of voters in MI and Wisconsin reported that the president "embarrassed" them, compared to 63 percent of Pennsylvania voters who agreed. Michigan's 16 electoral votes went to Trump after he very narrowly defeated former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton with 47.5 percent of the vote.

MI voters gave Democrats a 13 point advantage over Republicans when asked who they preferred to control Congress after 2018.

In Michigan, voters by a 42-to-39 percent margin say the US economy has been strengthened by Trump's decisions as president.

The polls were conducted August 13-17, after last weekend's white supremacist rally and violence in Charlottesville, Va., and amid the fallout from Trump's response to those events. The margin is 45-to-38 percent in Pennsylvania and 41-to-41% in Wisconsin.

In Michigan, 42 percent of voters believed the USA economy had been strengthened under Trump, a sentiment agreed to by 45 percent of Pennsylvania voters and 41 percent of Wisconsin voters.

Additionally, voters in these swing states expressed a preference for a Democratic-controlled Congress in 2018. Each poll has a plus or minus 3.5 percentage point margin of error.

Pennsylvania and Wisconsin voters preferred the Democrats too, with Pennsylvanians giving the Dems a 10 point advantage and Wisconsinites giving them an 8 point edge.
