Alphabet flirts with Lyft: Google parent may invest $1 billion

Alphabet flirts with Lyft: Google parent may invest $1 billion

Alphabet and Lyft declined to comment on the report. Google, which had previously invested $258 million in Uber (via Google Ventures), is suing Uber for allegedly stealing thousands of files from Google's self driving auto company, Waymo. It is also not clear which Alphabet division would make the $1 billion investment in the popular ride-hailing platform.

Back in 2013, Google has invested in Uber and Now the company is showing interest in buying some part of its biggest rival. Like Uber, Lyft believes self-driving cars will be a boon to ride-sharing, and is moving aggressively to develop the technology. This was evident when the company offered promotional code for a Lyft ride for the upcoming Pixel 2 launch event. Lyft was in informal talks with Alphabet along with other possible suitors in 2016 but a sale was not pursued. The lawsuit alleges that Mr. Levandowski took more than 14,000 confidential files on his way out the door and provided them to Uber's self-driving division when the company hired him later that year. Uber also reportedly is under federal investigation for its "Hell" program it allegedly used to spy on Lyft drivers, and its "Greyball" software used to evade regulators in cities where it wasn't allowed to operate.

Lyft is in competition with Uber among ride-hailing services in the US, while Waymo is competing fiercely with Uber in the creation of technology for autonomous cars.

Uber appointed a new chief executive, former Expedia CEO Dara Khosrowshahi, in late August after a string of scandals.

That sort of money would allow Lyft to ratchet up its competition for drivers domestically - Uber has long used the billions in its coffers to help lure drivers with incentives - as well as consider an global expansion.

In San Francisco, the company has expanded its shuttle service with a total eight routes, and it has six sroutes in Chicago.
