Amazon and Google clash over YouTube on the Echo Show

Amazon and Google clash over YouTube on the Echo Show

However, in an unexpected turn of events, YouTube has been disabled on the Amazon Echo Show; not by Amazon but Google.

The action removes access to the web's largest source of streaming video from a $230 device with a display that's used largely for watching streaming video. Companies like #Apple and Google have forayed into this sector and are doing quite well. But now, when you try to fire up that Barefoot Contessa clip, Alexa says, "Currently, Google is not supporting Youtube on Echo Show". Hopefully, Google's rampant anti-competitive actions can be adequately reigned in, if not by United States competition authorities by the more diligent European Commission. But even there, signs of turbulence between Google and Amazon are not hard to spot; the YouTube "app" on Fire TV is merely a link to the service's TV-optimised web page, similar to that used by smart TVs.

The Amazon Echo Show is a smart speaker powered by Alexa that comes with a small screen to allow users to watch videos.

According to Amazon, Google pulled out YouTube without explanation and without prior notification. The company also said that this decision is disappointing and hurts their customers as there is no any technical reason.

While Amazon looks like they are playing the victim card here, Google's statement shows us the other side of the story: Amazon's implementation of YouTube on the Echo Show violates our terms of service, creating a broken user experience.

One of the advantages with that is looking at the people you're video calling.

Steve Boom, VP of Amazon Music, said: "Amazon Music customers already know and love Alexa from listening on Echo devices". It will resolve these issues soon.

Google's YouTube API terms of services requires developers to retain certain features of the core YouTube experience. However, more recently, the company recently struck a deal with Apple to once again carry the device, and also make its video app available to Apple TV users.

Alternatively, this might just be Google and Amazon fighting to keep its services exclusive.

Now, this clearly seems to be a spat between the two.
