Authorities reject Rohingya Muslims trapped after violence in Myanmar

Authorities reject Rohingya Muslims trapped after violence in Myanmar

He said Bangladesh has allowed the Rohingya people to seek temporary shelter and provided them humanitarian support, adding that the influx of refugees is faster than the government is able to set up camps.

Although the crisis has worsened sharply in recent weeks, hundreds of thousands more Rohingya were already in Bangladesh from waves of violence years earlier, while others were displaced within Myanmar.

"We have told Myanmar that they will have to take back their citizens".

Space at established refugee camps in Bangladesh has all but been exhausted, with new arrivals hacking away trees and other vegetation anywhere they can to erect shelters from the monsoon rain.

Numerous displaced have arrived with horrific tales of killings and rapes by Myanmar's security forces and Buddhist militias. The indiscriminate and systematic attacks against Muslims by extremist elements and some associated with government security forces of Myanmar have resulted in significant loss of life and exacerbated a history of discrimination and desperation.

Military chief Senior General Min Aung Hlaing said his forces had handled the situation as best they could and he urged the internally displaced, majority Buddhist, to go home.

Last week, Boris Johnson was criticised for describing Aung San Suu Kyi, Burma's de facto leader and the Nobel Peace Prize-winner, as "one of the most inspiring figures of our age", despite the violence.

The social network is a key tool in the information war taking place over violence in Myanmar's Rakhine state, which has driven more than 420,000 Rohingya Muslims from the country and sparked United Nations accusations of military-led "ethnic cleansing".

Smoke could be seen rising from at least two places in Myanmar on Wednesday, a Reuters reporter in Bangladesh said.

"National races" refers to officially recognised indigenous ethnic groups. This is the first comment the USA has made about the plight of the Rohingya.

He will travel to Sittwe, the capital of Rakhine State, to meet government officials and representatives of different communities, including Rohingya, but he is not seeking to travel to the conflict zone in northern Rakhine State.

Rohingya refugees are fleeing from violence-hit state of Rakhine in Myanmar to India and Bangladesh.

Mr Singh said, the statement of Suu Kyi brings a new hope in this regard.

Suu Kyi rejected a suggestion she was soft on the military, telling Radio Free Asia her objective was national reconciliation. Suu Kyi said she nevertheless wanted the worldwide community to know what was being done by her government.

Terming the ongoing Rohingyas issue as a major challenge from across the border in Myanmar, the BJP leader said the government is handling infiltration and illegal migration with "utmost maturity".
