Delta Flight's Irma Feat: In and Out Between Bands of Hurricane

Delta Flight's Irma Feat: In and Out Between Bands of Hurricane

Jason Rabinowitz, a self-described aviation geek who tracked the flight on radar, said it was "amazing stuff" to watch Flight 431 in real time fly toward the menacing storm.

Delta flight 431 chose to go it alone, racing from New York's JFK airport directly into the path of the storm for its destination: San Juan.

Before the flight even took off, the internet was wondering just what would happen, with Facebook user Wladimir Castro posting a video of the flight as it was leaving Puerto Rico.

The jet landed in San Juan, Puerto Rico on Wednesday a little after noon.

"Rabinowitz explained the pilot flew the plane between Irma's outer band and the core of the hurricane, which "[allowed] the aircraft to navigate in relatively calm air".

Navarro, who came to Youngstown from Puerto Rico when he was 14, has followed some of the news coverage and believes the governor of Puerto Rico, who has declared a state of emergency, has a handle on the situation. He lived in Western New York for more than 50 years.

Delta Flight's Irma Feat: In and Out Between Bands of Hurricane

Despite the delay in leaving NY, the flight managed to get out of Puerto Rico at 12:41pm, 24 minutes ahead of its scheduled takeoff.

Throughout the storm, the Puerto Rico Tourism Company worked together with the private sector to manage all inquiries from concerned travelers and coordinated with other government agencies on efforts to prepare for Hurricane Irma's potential impact.

"There are maximum tailwind and crosswind limits that have to be observed", Smith explained.

Here they go! DL302 now taxiing for takeoff before #Irma gets really bad. Delta does, Rabinowitz noted, accurately predicting the conditions would be safe to land, if nothing slowed them down. There was only light rain at the time of landing. Merced said the wind was picking up and the power had been off for about an hour. By 3 p.m., the wind in San Juan had increased to 50 miles per hour and the visibility dropped to a little over a mile.

And while many Puerto Rican homes are made to withstand tropical storms, Flor warns that is not always the case in America.
