Hurricane Jose lingers in Atlantic, will it head toward US?

Unlike other hurricanes in this part of the Atlantic Ocean, which tend to race out to sea, meteorologists expect that Jose will make a tight clockwise loop in the open waters over the three days, during which it will not affect any land areas.

Hurricane Jose, which has been lingering as Irma took aim at Florida, has weakened slightly as it circles in the Atlantic Ocean, according to the National Hurricane Center.

The forecast path for Hurricane Jose in the next few days is so odd that internet commenters have come up with the advice, "Go home, Jose, you're drunk".

According to the National Hurricane Center in an update at 5 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 12, Jose is a Category 1 storm with 75 miles per hour winds.

Irma, which had rampaged through the Caribbean as one of the most powerful Atlantic hurricanes on record, was downgraded to a tropical depression on Monday.

Current long-term forecast models for Jose are all over the map next week. It will initially move farther away from the United States before coming closer to the Bahamas and East Coast.

"At This point in time we don't want to put anything out there that Jose is headed to The Bahamas, it is irresponsible at this time", Mr. Simmons said.

Jose's wind forecast, updated today by the National Hurricane Center, show tropical-storm level winds reaching near Florida and the coastal Carolinas by Friday.

WEATHER forecasters said yesterday Hurricane Jose does not now pose an imminent threat to The Bahamas.

Before this hurricane season, the United States had gone a record 12 years without a major hurricane landfall. The upside is hurricane season slows down from here until the end of November, so everyone along the coasts should be able to breathe easy again in a few short months.
