Irma could continue Harvey's upward impact on gas prices

Irma could continue Harvey's upward impact on gas prices

Hurricane Irma is still "extremely dangerous" and will "devastate" parts of the Southeastern United States, federal officials and agencies have warned.

Southwest and American airlines had the most canceled flights Monday, according to FlightAware, with United less affected by Irma than by Hurricane Harvey, a category 4 hurricane which swept into Houston off the Texas Gulf Coast two weeks ago.

Hurricane Harvey is an unnatural disaster. Now, Hurricane Irma is tearing through Florida.

Moody's also lowered its third quarter GDP estimate to 2.5% from 3%, citing a loss in economic output following the storms that could reach as much as $30 billion.

Irma was a Category 5 hurricane, the most risky measure by the National Hurricane Center, before being downgraded to Category 4 early on Friday after pummelling islands in the Caribbean. AccuWeather says that taken together, the price of the two storms will be 1.5% of GDP growth in the period of mid-August through the end of the year.

September 11-Days after resuming a full flight schedule in Houston, United Airlines and other carriers are completely shut down across the state of Florida in the wake of Hurricane Irma. There were burglaries and looting, so, the police arrested some people. Some were criticized as fares for flights out of Florida rose before the storm.

Like a storm surge that initially withdraws water from low-lying areas before it floods back in, the US economy is nearly certain to see a surge in spending in the fourth quarter that largely or entirely offsets the negative drain in the third quarter. Winds of that strength are capable of causing catastrophic damage. Storm surge will be another major threat.

Long said he has faith that Congress will move swiftly if there's a need for more money.

"AAA will continue to monitor Irma's path and the potential impact the hurricane could have on residents in the area, as well as the refineries, pipelines and supply distribution components", said Jeanette Casselano, AAA spokesperson.

The storm will weaken once it gets through the Florida Panhandle and Georgia, but the harmful, life-threatening effects of the storm could last into Wednesday or Thursday north of Florida.
