Joe Paterno May Have Admitted To Prior Knowledge Of Jerry Sandusky's Abuses

Joe Paterno May Have Admitted To Prior Knowledge Of Jerry Sandusky's Abuses

CNN obtained a Pennsylvania police report that described Paterno's reaction to whistleblower Mike McQueary showing up in his office in 2001 and telling Paterno that he had witnessed Sandusky engaged in "an extreme sexual act" with a young boy in the football locker room.

The report says that when whistleblower and former Penn State assistant coach Mike McQueary told Paterno in 2001 that he'd witnessed Sandusky performing a lewd sexual act with a young boy, Paterno allegedly told McQueary that his was the second such claim against Sandusky.

McQueary, according to the police report obtained via a source by CNN, reported that Paterno appeared to tear up at the news.

Jerry Sandusky, who served on Paterno's coaching staff for 30 years until his retirement in 1999, was arrested in 2011 and convicted in 2012 for sexually abusing 10 boys in 15 years.

"Success without honor is an unseasonal dish; it will satisfy your hunger but it won't taste good", Paterno once said in one of his most famous quotes. McQueary allegedly told Paterno about what he'd seen the day after it occurred.

While McQueary had testified in court many times about Paterno's response to his report, he never mentioned from the witness stand - nor was he directly asked - about whether Paterno told him about other Sandusky incidents.

Because of McQueary and Paterno legally doing the right thing and following their "chain of command" when reporting sexual abuse, new laws have been put in place where someone is required to report any sexual molestation to the police.

Paterno died in January 2012, less than three months after the scandal came to light.

However, court documents show concerns about Sandusky were raised both by assistant coaches in the 1980s and even earlier in the 1970s by two unidentified men.

Sanducky was convicted of 45 counts of child sexual abuse in 2012 and is now serving his 30-60 year prison sentence.

Also in his 2013 testimony, McQueary said Paterno in the years after 2001 made passing remarks about how Sandusky "was a sick guy" and said the university "screwed up" in its handling of the 2001 allegation.

Paterno and McQueary had "no discussion of the previous complaint at that time or any other time", the report states. "With the benefit of hindsight, I wish I had done more".
