Manchester City to fail to land Alexis Sanchez on transfer deadline day

Manchester City to fail to land Alexis Sanchez on transfer deadline day

Sanchez's Arsenal contract runs out next summer and he will be able to discuss a move with foreign clubs as soon as 2018 begins.

The midfielder's move to Anfield was one of the biggest domestic transfer of deadline day as Oxlade-Chamberlain insisted he wants to take his game to the next level.

Manchester City were reportedly ready to pay Arsenal forward Alexis Sanchez a signing-on fee of £8 million had his move to the club gone through late in the summer window.

The Gunners were looking to replace him with Thomas Lemar, who ended up staying at Monaco, hence scuppering the move.

Alexis' agent Fernando Felicevich was said to be furious yesterday and placed all the blame on Arsenal, telling both clubs that he would "not forget" Arsenal's role in what happened yesterday.

Sanchez has scored 53 goals in 104 appearances for Arsenal.

United Kingdom bookmakers are also offering odds on troubled Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger leaving the club before the end of the season.

Arsene Wenger is quietly optimistic that Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez could still sign contract extensions at Arsenal. It was first reported that they had "no more money" for any major signings, only for them to later scuttle in with a £92 million offer for Thomas Lemar as their situation quickly unravelled before them.

On a more positive note, Wenger was asked about French and Arsenal legend Thierry Henry, to which he replied with a simple declaration of: "The best player I managed at Arsenal". The 24-year-old appeared set to join Chelsea earlier this week after the champions had a bid accepted.

Manager Arsene Wenger has kept his pledge to retain Sanchez, but introducing the striker back into his Arsenal squad after the global break will be hard given that he already had his heart set on a move to City.

The likes of Thomas Lemar and Alexis Sanchez would not have known where they would be playing their club football next week and both had to focus on matches for their global teams at the same time.
