Mexico braces itself for impact of Hurricane Katia

While Category 5 Hurricane Irma is now ransacking the Caribbean and posing a threat to Florida this weekend, those in Mexico may also experience a major weather disturbance with the arrival of Hurricane Katia.

The quake, the strongest to strike Mexico in more than 80 years, killed at least 61 people. Along those parts of the coast, Katia's storm surge - the quick rise in water caused by a hurricane's strong winds - could raise water levels as much as 8 feet above normal tides.

A tropical storm warning is in effect for north of Cabo Rojo to Rio Panuco and south of Laguna Verde to Puerto Veracruz, the NHC stated.

The hurricane quickly lost strength after hitting land and was downgraded to a tropical storm.

MIAMI - Weather forecasters: Katia becomes a tropical storm as it moves further into Mexico, with speeds of 45 miles per hour.

The hurricane center says the storm is expected to bring 10 to 15 inches of rain to the area, which has a history of deadly mudslides and flooding.

Meanwhile, Mexico is dealing with the aftermath of a powerful natural disaster on Thursday night.

Hurricane Jose continued to gather strength far out in the Atlantic and was nearing Category 5 strength as it churned about 435 miles east-southeast of the Northern Leeward Islands. Hardest-hit was Juchitan, Oaxaca, where 36 people died and a third of the city's homes collapsed or were otherwise rendered uninhabitable, President Enrique Pena Nieto said late Friday in an interview with the Televisa news network. Some were newly homeless, while others feared further aftershocks could topple their cracked adobe dwellings.
