Mexico expels North Korean ambassador in protest of nuclear test

Mexico expels North Korean ambassador in protest of nuclear test

"This evening, the United States informed the UN Security Council that it intends to call a meeting to vote on a draft resolution to establish additional sanctions on North Korea on Monday, September 11", a statement from the U.S. mission to the UN read.

"The potential consequences of a military action are too horrific", the Secretary General said, referring to the rhetoric being used by US President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un.

Meanwhile, two Japanese fighters and two USA bombers carried out a joint exercise over the East China Sea on Saturday, Defence Minister Itsunori Onodera said in Tokyo.

President Donald Trump on Thursday again refused to rule out USA military action in North Korea, telling reporters that the nuclear-armed dictatorship has been "behaving very badly, and it's got to stop".

"I believe that President Xi agrees with me 100%", Trump said from the White House's South Lawn as he prepared to board Marine One.

While China has not discussed military planning for a crisis on the Korean Peninsula with the USA or others, its defense ministry reported that the armed forces carried out drills in nearby waters two days after North Korea said it exploded a hydrogen bomb on Sunday.

The draft resolution would allow states to intercept and inspect on the high seas vessels that have been blacklisted by the Security Council.

President Trump tussles with Major Garrett of CBS News over his plans for North Korea at a joint press conference with Amir Sabah al-Ahmed al-Jaber al-Sabah of Kuwait on Wednesday.

Defence Minister Itsunori Onodera told reporters that his ministry's upward revision to 160 kilotons was based on a revised magnitude by the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organisation (CTBTO).

The August 5 resolution capped the number of North Koreans working overseas at the current level. But the biggest restriction would ban the sale of oil, refined petroleum products, and natural gas liquids to the North.

Just how committed China is to assisting the U.S.is unclear. Both countries are permanent members of the Security Council.

What to do about North Korea?

Any agreement China and the United States reach over how to deal with North Korea's nuclear threat is a welcome development. Pyongyang has not mentioned a figure, while South Korea's military predicted it to have been 50 kilotons, or equal to about 50,000 tons of TNT.

He provided no further details, including whether Trump would consider slapping sanctions on China, North Korea's largest trade partner.

Joseph DeTrani is a former special diplomat to the six party talks. "I don't talk about them".

"I ask Russian Federation to actively cooperate as this time it is inevitable that North Korea's oil supply should be cut at the least", Moon told Putin, according to a readout from a South Korean official. "They don't want to totally alienate the leadership in Pyongyang".

Washington and Seoul say the Terminal High-Altitude Area Defense system allows South Korea and US troops stationed in the country to better cope with the threat of North Korean missiles. For China, the time for worrying about the stability of the Kim regime should really be over, too. That situation would create a refugee crisis on China's border. If adopted, the resolution would require countries to expel such workers deemed to be remitting funds to the government in Pyongyang and block future work authorizations.

Yun Sun is a China expert at the Stimson Center in Washington DC.

He said the United Nations should take "necessary measures", but added that sanctions and pressure should spur negotiation between the sides towards the goal of a peaceful solution on the Korean peninsula.
