Outer Banks to see tropical storm force conditions from Maria

With some effects from Maria expected, officials issued mandatory evacuation orders Monday for visitors on Hatteras and Ocracoke islands.

The storm is slated to pass by North Carolina on Tuesday and Wednesday. Hurricane force winds extend out about 70 miles from the center, and tropical storm force winds extend out 260 miles.

Reports from a NOAA Hurricane Hunter aircraft indicate that maximum sustained winds are now near 110 miles per hour with higher gusts.

While Maria is now a Category 1 hurricane, it will likely be downgraded to a strong tropical storm by the time it reaches a point roughly 100 to 200 miles east of Cape Hatteras.

The U.S. National Hurricane Center says the core of Maria is expected to move well east of the Southeast U.S. coast over the next day or so.

Individuals in the states which could be afffected have been warned of potentially risky weather conditions, like rip tides, and the storm is being monitored carefully to track its progess.

Schools were closed Tuesday in Dare County because of the storm conditions. Swells also continue to affect Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, the northern coast of Hispaniola, the Turks and Caicos Islands, and the Bahamas.

Residents working on their roof in badly damaged neighborhood are seen from a Marine Corps MV-22 Osprey surveying the aftermath from Hurricane Maria in St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands on September 21, 2017. Adrienne Kina, who normally works as a saleswoman at REAL Watersports, says this storm "is going to screw" the locals all over again.

The TS Kennedy, a former commercial freighter used by the Maritime Administration for training, is now sailing from Texas to the Virgin Islands to support hurricane recovery efforts in the U.S. Virgin Island and Puerto Rico.
