Police interfered to decide on Burnley vs Leeds penalty shootout

Police interfered to decide on Burnley vs Leeds penalty shootout

Stoke City were one of two English Premier League sides to lose to lower-league opposition in the League Cup third round on Tuesday, after they crashed 2-0 to Championship side Bristol City.

An EFL spokesman said: 'As a result of police advice, in conjunction with the club's safety officer, it was agreed at the conclusion of extra-time that the penalty kicks would be taken at the home end of the stadium due to general safety concerns'.

Ladbrokes, who only a month ago came on board as Burnley's "official United Kingdom betting partner", tweeted the raised middle-finger along with the words "Yours sincerely, Leeds fans #LUFC".

In a statement, Ladbrokes said: "They were very poorly conceived tweets which we have since deleted".

Taylor played the full 120 minutes of the enthralling encounter, which ended 2-2 after full-time and, with the scores tied following extra-time, was decided in Leeds' favour by a penalty shoot-out.

"I don't know any more how fans react to players, ex-players, all that stuff, but that's football now".

Speaking after the defeat, the Burnley manager, Sean Dyche, said he was disappointed to hear Wood and Taylor being targeted by their former fans, adding: "It's a unusual business, football".

That proved to be an inspired substitution by United manager Thomas Christiansen as the winger went on to break the deadlock and spark a late flurry of goals which saw the Clarets equalise twice in normal time to force a shoot-out and eventually penalties.

Those two have been fantastic servants to Leeds, if I'm honest.
