Record number of people arrested for terrorism-related offences in Britain

Record number of people arrested for terrorism-related offences in Britain

The numbers includes a series of arrests that were made following the Manchester and London attacks.

And there was one arrest following another attack in June, when a van was driven into worshippers near a mosque in north London, killing one man.

The security services made a record number of terror arrests over the past year, officials figures show.

Prisons saw the number of terrorist inmates rise by 35 per cent this year to 204, continuing an upward trend since statistics were first collected in 2001.

A total of 379 people were held on suspicion of terror-related crimes in the year to June - more than one every day.

But most were not, and even without those major incidents, terror would still have been up by 102 on the year before.

According to the Home Office quarterly bulletin on the police's use of counter-terrorism powers, 123 of the suspects arrested were charged - 105 with terrorism offences - while 189 were released.

The figures show that of those who have been arrested, 32% result in a charge.

"That's why we're looking at such a high number, but they are still pretty significant".

While more than three quarters of the arrests were related to global terrorism, there was a sharp rise in the number of arrests for domestic terrorism (from 10 to 52).

Domestic terrorism refers to activity where there are no links to either Northern Ireland-related or worldwide terrorism.

The police and MI5 are typically running about 500 investigations involving 3,000 individuals at any time, and at least 20,000 former "subjects of interest" are also kept under review, according to the Sky News website.

Earlier this year, Met Police Commissioner Cressida Dick revealed her officers had thwarted a number of plots, some of them were "very close to attacks, very close", some of them just "minutes away".
