Ruthless Proteas bash tourists on day one

Ruthless Proteas bash tourists on day one

Bangladesh toiled after surprisingly electing to bowl in the second Test to be staged in Potchefstroom and first since they lost to the Proteas by an innings and 160 runs in 2002.

Elgar was well supported by debutant Aiden Markram, who fell agonisingly short of scoring a hundred, and Hashim Amla, who made an unbeaten 68. The duo added 100 runs on the final session with Amla crossing a well compiled fluent half century while Elgar dropped anchor as South Africa posted 298 for one at stumps on day one.

The pitch at Senwes Park is expected to be a good batting strip with some pace for the quick bowlers, and Bangladesh's decision to bowl first was a surprise.

As it was, the South Africans were delighted to bat, and Elgar and Markram took full advantage registering the first 50 partnership for the opening wicket for South Africa, since the New Year's Test against Sri Lanka - eight matches ago.

Markram nearly cemented his place permanently in the side as he scored fifty on his debut, becoming the ninth South African batsmen to do so.

"The Momentum Proteas will also be involved with doubleheader T20 global matches between South Africa and India".

Elgar, on 99, played the ball towards backward point in what proved to be the last over before tea.

However, there was to be no hundred on debut for Markram as a mix-up between him and Elgar saw him get run out by Mehidy Hasan Miraz for 97, which came off 152 balls and included 13 boundaries. The former West Indies coach faces a challenging first season with the Proteas, with tests against Bangladesh and Zimbabwe followed by back-to-back tours by top-ranked test team India and then Australia. He strained a thigh muscle on the first day of the match.

Kaushal Silva (12) was the other wicket to fall before lunch, bowled by Hasan Ali.
