S Korea braces for possible missile test

S Korea braces for possible missile test

North Korea fired the ICBMs at highly lofted angles in July to reduce ranges and avoid other countries, but South Korean officials said the next launches could be conducted at angles close to operational as the North would test whether the warheads survive the harsh conditions of atmospheric re-entry and detonate properly.

"We have made a decision to temporarily deploy the remaining launchers along with United States construction equipment and materials (...) to prepare for the heightened security situation in North Korea due to North Korea's nuclear and missile threats", the South Korean Defence Ministry said in a statement.

Trump has repeatedly said all options are on the table in dealing with North Korea, including the military one.

The statement says both leaders stressed that the global community has condemned North Korea's "provocations".

The United States wants the U.N. Security Council to impose an oil embargo on North Korea, ban its exports of textiles and the hiring of North Korean laborers overseas, and to subject leader Kim Jong Un to an asset freeze and travel ban, according to a draft resolution seen by Reuters on Wednesday. "We ultimately need talks with North Korea, but it is not the time right now to speak of a dialogue with North Korea".

North Korea says it needs its weapons to protect itself from USA aggression.

Parts of a Terminal High Altitude Area Defense system arrive at Seongju South Korea
Parts of a Terminal High Altitude Area Defense system arrive at Seongju South Korea

China's Foreign Ministry demanded Thursday that the Thaad system must be removed immediately.

In addition, the order was issued citing rising nuclear and missile threats from the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), which tested what it called a hydrogen bomb warhead earlier this month and what it claimed was a ballistic missile with intercontinental capability in July. Abe is due to meet Putin separately later in the day.

Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Geng Shuang also reiterated Beijing's opposition to South Korea's deployment of the US Terminal High-Altitude Area Defence System, also known as THAAD, which is meant to protect against North Korean missile attacks. But all of a sudden, they are enthusiastically inciting the Chinese people to oppose the Thaad installation. North Korea vehemently objects to military exercises on or near the peninsula, and China and Russian Federation have suggested the United States and South Korea halt their exercises to lower tension.

The launchers installed on Thursday were added to the two already set up on the site, an old golf course located about 300 km south of Seoul.

State-run media in China condemned the deployment. "We will make necessary preparations to use the capability as soon as the internal procedures are completed on the USA side". South Korea and the United States are technically still at war with North Korea after the 1950-53 Korean conflict ended with a truce, not a peace treaty.
