Saudi king lifts ban on female drivers

Saudi king lifts ban on female drivers

The average monthly wage of a domestic driver in Saudi Arabia is 1500 riyals.

President Donald Trump has commended Saudi Arabia's decision to allow women to drive. Saudi women have lobbied for their right to drive since 1990 when the first public protest - a congregation of just 47 women - took place.

For the longest time, women had to be driven around or to work by their male counterparts (or relatives), whom they spent much of their salaries on. The shock announcement, which risks riling religious conservatives, is part of Saudi Arabia's ambitious reform push aimed at adapting to a post-oil era and improving a global reputation battered by its human rights record.

Several activists have long campaigned for females to drive, eaching a peak in 2013 when some women were arrested by police for breaking the driving ban.

The United States has welcomed Saudi Arabia's announcement that women will be allowed to drive for the first time.

"Following the decree, women will no longer need permission from a legal guardian to get a licence and will not need a guardian in the vehicle when they drive", The Guardian reports.

Under these laws, women can not travel overseas, work or undergo some medical procedures without the consent of their male "guardian", often a father, a husband or even a son. In 2013, a group of 10 women made a decision to challenge the ban and drive. In major cities, women can access ride-hailing apps such as Uber and Careem.

Nauert is calling it "a great step in the right direction for that country". "We also need to see a whole range of discriminatory laws and practices swept away in Saudi Arabia including the guardianship system where every woman has a male guardian, be it their father, brother, husband or son, having authority to make decisions on her behalf", Luther said. "Things have to change". "If a crisis erupts, we must drive for the sake of our families".

Women will be able to obtain a licence without permission from their male guardian and be allowed to drive without a male guardian in the vehicle.

And because the country - with the help of God - is the guardian of Islamic values, it considers preserving those values one of its priorities, in this matter and in others, and will not hesitate to take any means to ensure the security and safety of its society.

"King Salman bin Abdulaziz al Saud has issued a decree authorizing the issuance of drivers' licenses for women in the kingdom", Saudi state TV said. The implementation - God willing - will be from 10/10/1439 (Islamic date in June 2018) and in accordance with rules and regulations, and the completion of the necessary steps.
