Tropical storms Jose, Katia upgraded to hurricane status

Tropical storms Jose, Katia upgraded to hurricane status

Katia became a Category 1 hurricane in the southern Gulf of Mexico not too far from where Harvey formed two weeks ago. The image showed that deep convection and thunderstorms were forming over the center. A hurricane watch has been issued for the Mexican state of Veracruz by the Mexican government.

There is the indication of an eye in a visible light image from NOAA's GOES East satellite on September 8 at 9:15 a.m. EDT (1315 UTC). It's still unclear how Irma will affect the United States, though Florida is bracing for a possible hit.

Katia is forecast to turn southeastward in the next 24 hours and will move in that direction before turning southwest on Friday.

The National Hurricane Center (NHC) has announced that both Jose and Katia have been upgraded to hurricanes, with the latter having maximum sustained winds of 75 miles per hour.

The trio of storms closely follow the deadly onslaught by Hurricane Harvey, which drenched the US Gulf Coast with historic rainfall and triggered widespread flooding. Near the coast, the surge will be accompanied by large and destructive waves.

"This rainfall may cause life-threatening flash floods and mudslides, especially in areas of mountainous terrain", the Miami-based NHC said. The center of Katia is expected to remain off the shore of Mexico through Friday morning. That's 140 miles (220 km) north-northeast of Veracruz, Mexico. It's now about 1,040 miles east of a collection of islands in the Caribbean Sea.

Jose has sustained winds of 85 miles per hour, and it is moving west-northwest at 17 miles per hour.

Jose is expected to reach hurricane strength later in the day, the NHC said. The estimated minimum central pressure is 1004 millibars.

According to their forecast, Katia could make a landfall on southeastern Mexico in the coming weekend.
