Trump allows new weapons sales to South Korea, Japan

Trump allows new weapons sales to South Korea, Japan

After Seoul made a decision to bring the U.S. missile defense system to Korea, Chinese authorities subjected South Korean firms' Chinese operations to various regulatory measures, while some consumer groups boycotted South Korean products, and businesses.

Speaking to the press on the sidelines of the Eastern Economic Forum in Russia's Vladivostok on Wednesday, Putin said Russian Federation couldn't accept the possibility of a nuclear North Korea but acknowledged that the standoff could not be resolved by sanctions alone.

Amid escalating tensions in the Korean Peninsula, South Korean President Moon Jae-in on Wednesday asked his Russian counterpart's cooperation in urging the worldwide community cut off crude oil supplies to the North Korean regime.

"We should not give in to emotions and push Pyongyang into a corner", Putin said during a news conference after meeting with Moon on Wednesday in Vladivostock.

"It is far bigger than past (North Korean) nuclear tests", said Onodera.

He told reporters before his departure from Japan that "We must make North Korea understand there is no bright future for the country if it pursues the current path". A THAAD battery is known to require at least six rocket launchers, also involving a fire control and communications unit.

The announcement follows North Korea's detonation on Sunday of its largest ever nuclear bomb, which it claims to have been a long-feared hydrogen bomb capable of being placed on a long-range intercontinental ballistic missile.

Furthermore, as the crisis on the Korean Peninsula has escalated, the divisions in the Trump administration have resulted in an incoherent policy, which swings wildly between threats of all-out war and suggestions of talks, further inflaming the already explosive situation.

Early on Monday, around 8,000 South Korean police gathered in the village of Soseong-ri, along the only road that leads up to the golf course, to break up a blockade of around 300 villagers and civic groups opposed to THAAD. He sought to obscure the differences by stating that Song's comments "were meant in the sense of exploring every available option militarily and identifying a realistic approach amid the severe nuclear and missile threat, including North Korea's sixth nuclear test".

Chinese authorities lodged a formal complaint Wednesday with Seoul's ambassador to China, Kim Jang-soo, and on Thursday Beijing's Foreign Ministry issued a statement calling on Seoul and Washington to call off the THAAD deployment.

"We discussed, in particular, the possibility of joint economic activities on the South Kuril Islands", Putin said.

South Korean officials said they continued to monitor for radioactive fallout from the test and for signs of preparations for more activity as they pushed for a stronger global response.

Such pressure would include tougher sanctions being negotiated at the U.N. Security Council, the two leaders said at their 50-minute meeting on the sidelines of an economic summit here. The Trump administration's goal is to ram through such a resolution by September 11, the enforcement of which would largely depend on China cutting exports to the North.

He called on all North Korea's neighbours to show restraint, suggesting the bellicose rhetoric and military drills are "playing into their hands".
