Two die after mountain of rubbish collapses in India

Delhi's Ghazipur landfill, one of the four methane-filled simmering landfills in the Capital, is on the Waste Atlas 2014 list of 50 biggest dump sites in the world.

A National Disaster Response Force team was also pressed into the rescue operations.

While two men, who were astride on a scooter and biker when thrown into the water, managed to swim to safety, another man and a woman died, possibly because they lost consciousness due to the impact of their fall.

"Visited Ghazipur site. It's man-made disaster. Reason of the incident can be ascertained only after investigation".

Panic prevailed in the area soon after the incident, prompting scores of residents, passersby, and motorists run to rescue people who came under the rubbles.

The garbage comes from east Delhi, home to more than 4 million of the capital's 21 million people.

"It is important that steps be taken to develop alternate additional landfill sites for Delhi and scientific disposal of garbage be ensured".

"The methodology of waste disposal at this mountain of garbage is wrong".

Deputy Commissioner of Police, east district, Omvir Singh Bishnoi, said the deceased has were identified as 30-year-old Rajkumari and 20-year-old Abhishek. Several modern techniques are available to dispose garbage across the world. However, preliminary reports suggest that the intermittent rains in city could have triggered its collapse. "We had to clear the voluminous muck before we could begin pulling out the vehicles on to the road", said a fire officer.

Every day, 2,500 metric tonnes of garbage are dumped there.
