US Open Men's semi-finals preview: Del Potro and Nadal lock horns

US Open Men's semi-finals preview: Del Potro and Nadal lock horns

Top seed Rafael Nadal swept past Argentina's Juan Martin del Potro in brilliant style to set up a US Open final against Kevin Anderson. Nadal struck more winners than Del Potro in each of the last three sets, including by a whopping 13 to two margin in the second.

Nadal said that sometimes the only way to get better is to win matches, victories building the final 20 to 30% he needs to maximize his potent game.

"I need to be very focused with my serve and play aggressive", Nadal said, "because if you let him play from good positions with his forehand, you are dead, because he plays super-aggressive, hitting so hard".

"Playing against Rafa in my favourite tournament, I will try to enjoy the atmosphere and the game".

After thundering forehands past Federer with regularity, the 28-year-old is growing in confidence even if he believes that beating Nadal will take an even better performance.

He said: "It's a very tough one". Eeasing past all unseeded players so far in the tournament, Nadal now is up against the man who had defeated him at a similar stage eight years back.

"He's a lefty guy, so he has chance to find easily my backhand". "I'm dealing with just trying to understand what happened and just to overcome this in the next few hours, days, weeks, whatever it is, you know. But it will be an interesting match to play".

Del Potro has been the story of the second week in the men's draw with his miraculous comeback against Thiem followed by a brilliant win over Federer.

"He has an unbelievable serve and is a great example for the kids in the way he has come back from injury". So I had many problems before this match, but I was very motivate to play the semifinal in my best tournament.

"I think I never had control of the match".

Nadal holds a 8-5 career record against the Argentine; he won their first four meetings, but del Potro has a 5-4 edge in the past nine matchups.

Who could have thought that Kevin Anderson is going to reach the finals in this year's US Open edition?

Nadal will finish 2017 having reached the finals of three of the four grand slams. It will be the first all-American final at Flushing Meadows since the Williams sisters met for the 2002 US Open championship.

World No. 1 Nadal will be a significant favorite Sunday against No. 32 Kevin Anderson of South Africa, who beat Pablo Carreno Busta 4-6, 7-5, 6-3, 6-4 to become the lowest-ranked US Open finalist since the ATP's computer rankings began in 1973.

"I think it was really good match", the 12th seed assessed.

"For me, more than winning Grand Slams or not - of course, if I win, I will be more happy - but is about being healthy and feeling well and competitive", Nadal said.
