With World's Eyes on Rohingya Crisis, Myanmar's Top General Calls for Unity

With World's Eyes on Rohingya Crisis, Myanmar's Top General Calls for Unity

In a statement a police spokeswoman said they should stay in the designated camps until they return to their country.

Earlier, the United Nations top human rights official accused Myanmar of carrying out "a textbook example of ethnic cleansing" against Rohingya Muslims.

The Rohingya Muslims in Myanmar have long faced severe discrimination and were the targets of violence in 2012 that killed hundreds and drove about 140,000 people from their homes to camps for the internally displaced.

"We also need to, I think, up our responsibilities to take in humanitarian refugees as a matter of urgency".

Rights monitors and fleeing Rohingya say the Myanmar security forces and Rakhine Buddhist vigilantes responded to the 25 August insurgent attacks with what they say is a campaign of violence and arson aimed at driving out the Rohingya population.

Modi took sides on Suu Kyi's government and declared all out support to Myanmar.

Kutupalang, near the south-eastern Cox's Bazar city, is one of the areas where Bangladesh is setting up the shelters. "Clean water and sanitation can only be delivered in a structured environment".

"At the moment there's well over 50,000 people that we observed, literally yesterday, on the roadsides, settling in makeshift camps in very precarious conditions".

"It all depends on the resources the government throws at it and the resources we throw at it".

"Our field research backs what the satellite imagery has indicated - that the Burmese (Myanmar) military is directly responsible for the mass burning of Rohingya villages in northern Rakhine State", said Phil Robertson, deputy Asia director at Human Rights Watch. While parties like MIM, MBT, Congress, Welfare Party, TDP, left parties and even ruling TRS protest against attacks on Rohingyas in Myanmar and favour sheltering Rohingyas in Hyderabad, BJP is the only party that is opposing it.

Antonio Guterres, the Secretary General of the world body has warned that Myanmar's de facto leader Aung San Suu Kyi has "a last chance" to halt army offensive that has forced hundreds of thousands of the minority Rohingyas to flee overseas.

Bangladesh Foreign Minister A.H. Mahmood Ali said that Prime Minister Hasina would highlight the root cause behind the longstanding humanitarian crisis and place specific proposals for early solution during her address at the general debate on 21 September.
