26 take ill after meal on Goa-Mumbai train, 3 in ICU

The groups tour manager said they had been travelling continuously for the past 16 days in Maharashtra and Goa and were carrying their own cooks and food materials, including fish (Hilsa) from Kolkata, the report said.

Railway Ministry's spokesperson Anil Saxena had yesterday said a showcause notice had been served to the catering contractor and "strict action is contemplated" if he is found guilty.

It said the first case of uneasiness was reported after two children in a group of tourists from Himachal Pradesh vomited in the air-condition coach. The train was en route to Mumbai (CSTM) when the passengers complained about the deteriorating condition. Then two other gro ups complained, and a passenger on board who was a doctor attended to them."When complaints persisted, a message was sent to the Chiplun station master, who arranged for a doctor and ambulance".

The Indian Railways' internal inquiry report has concluded that the food quality served on-board Tejas Express was satisfactory - a day after 25 passengers were hospitalised due to food poisoning after consuming breakfast on the premium train, between Goa and Mumbai.

According to senior railway officials, the committee spoke to passengers, the AC mechanic, the train conductor and ticket examiners to find out the reason for the passengers throwing up as the initial suspicion was on the food served on the train. Passengers reported not feeling well from 12.30 pm onwards. It also did not clarify if the smell of the fish triggered the vomiting.

Mall said that the passengers were provided breakfast along with Knorr soup. The same is referred to as gestation and the poisoning may be triggered after consumption of other meals.

KR has already collected samples of all food served on the train for testing, and served a show-cause notice to the train's catering contractor. "The railways has not asked us for any inspection". When contacted by the Deccan Chronicle, IRCTC general manager, Arvind Malkhede claimed that they are not sure if the food served by them can be linked to the suspected food-poisoning incident.
