Delhi Diwali Firecrackers Banned in Delhi NCR

Diwali this year will be a less boisterous but - hopefully - much cleaner affair in and around the national capital as the Supreme Court on Monday banned the sale of firecrackers in Delhi-NCR till November 1, nearly two weeks after the festival of lights is over.

According to ANI, the traders have sought permission from the apex court to sell their existing stock. On Friday the Supreme Court had reserved its order on a plea for re-imposing a ban on selling firecrackers in the NCR.

The apex court, however, had said its order lifting the suspension of permanent licences might require a review after Diwali, depending on the ambient air quality after the festival.

A bench comprising Justices Ranjan Gogoi, A.M. Sapre and Navin Sinha assured the counsel for the traders that it would consult the judge concerned, who had passed the order, for placing their interim application for urgent hearing.

The government welcomed the move, with environment minister Harsh Vardhan requesting people to abide by the order.

The court, in its direction in 2016, had suspended all licenses which permits sale of fireworks, wholesale and retail within the territory of NCR till further orders. We are asking this question because they banned firecrackers because it effects the environment which is good but Farmers in Punjab and Haryana resort to stubble burning every year around October to clear the left over from the Kharif crop and make their fields ready for winter farming which could be the reason of air pollutions too. The apex court order misses out on a directive for such online sale of firecrackers.

The Supreme Court on Monday banned the sale of firecrackers till November 1 in the National Capital Region.

The World Health Organisation measures particulate matter known as PM2.5 and last week New Delhi levels were 17 times higher than what it deems safe.

In the video message, the India all-rounder recalled the trouble he had previous year due to pollution.
