Family held hostage in Afghanistan set to undergo medical exams in Canada

Family held hostage in Afghanistan set to undergo medical exams in Canada

Freed Canadian hostage Joshua Boyle has accused Taliban-linked kidnappers of murdering his baby daughter and raping his wife during his family's years-long captivity in Afghanistan.

Canada's Toronto Star newspaper reported that Boyle told his parents that he asked to be taken to the Canadian High Commission in Islamabad after their rescue. "The area was remote, no doctors were present and due to this severe condition, the woman had a natural miscarriage of a girl", Mujahid said in a statement.

Two US officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, on Thursday told Reuters that the USA military had been ready to fly the family out of the country after they were freed but said Boyle, who is Canadian, had refused to board the aircraft.

The couple and their children were freed by a Pakistani military operation and returned to Canada on Friday. The family was freed Wednesday by Pakistani troops acting on the basis of U.S. intelligence.

A spokesman for the Taliban claims a freed Canadian hostage's allegations that his wife was raped and his daughter killed by their abductors are "western propaganda".

The Haqqani group is headed by Sirajuddin Haqqani, who is also the Afghan Taliban's deputy leader.

A couple captured in Afghanistan in 2012.

"God has given me and my family unparalleled resilience and determination, and to allow that to stagnate, to pursue personal pleasure or comfort while there is still deliberate and organized injustice in the world would be a betrayal of all I believe, and tantamount to sacrilege", he wrote.

He nodded toward one of the State Department officials and said, "Their interests are not my interests". Coleman was pregnant at the time.

"Taking your pregnant wife to a very risky place, to me, and the kind of person I am, is unconscionable", said Jim Coleman.

Boyle said one of his children is suffering from health issues and needed to be force-fed by rescuers. Boyle told his parents that he, his wife and their children were intercepted by Pakistani forces while being transported in the back or trunk of their captors' vehicle and that some of his captors were killed. "And the stupidity and evil of the subsequent rape of my wife, not as the lone action of one guard, but assisted by the captain of the guards and the commandant".

Speaking in Toronto, he said: 'I assure you I have never refused to board any mode of transportation that would bring me closer to home, closer to Canada and back with my family.

Boyle had been a staunch critic of the human rights abuses in the United States war on terror after the attacks on September 11, 2001 and was previously married for a year to the sister of an inmate at the U.S. military detention centre at Guantanamo Bay. Her father, the late Ahmed Said Khadr, and the family stayed with Osama bin Laden briefly when Omar Khadr was a boy. They divorced in 2010. Officials had discounted any link between that background and Boyle's capture, with one official describing it in 2014 as a "horrible coincidence".
