Four dead in plane crash in Cote d'Ivoire

ABIDJAN, Ivory Coast - One person was taken into custody after a cargo plane crashed into the sea off Ivory Coast, close to Abidjan airport. The four people killed were Moldovan, and four French nationals and two Moldovans were injured.

Reports noted that the plane crashed during a storm with heavy rain and lightning.

The French military operates a logistics base next to the airport in support of its Barkhane operation, combating Islamist militants in West Africa's Sahel region. The plane was reportedly carrying freight for the French Army and went down in the Atlantic ocean soon after take off from the worldwide airport in the capital.

An investigation had been launched and Ivorian authorities were in contact with their French and Moldovan counterparts, he said. Four French citizens, reportedly soldiers, were also hurt.

In February 2000, a Kenya Airways Airbus 310 carrying 179 people destined for Lagos, Nigeria crashed into the ocean after takeoff from Abidjan, leaving only 10 survivors.
