House Oversight, Judiciary GOPers Announce Probe Into DOJ Moves In 2016

House Oversight, Judiciary GOPers Announce Probe Into DOJ Moves In 2016

Republicans have continued to focus on the FBI's handling of the Clinton probe, which ended just prior to the 2016 presidential election, due to former FBI Director James Comey's decision to announce that he would not recommend the Justice Department charge Clinton or her staff for sending classified documents over the former secretary of state's private email system.

The deal, involving the purchase of a company called Uranium One, was cleared when Hillary Clinton was secretary of state. Nine government agencies and a number of federal and state regulators approved the uranium deal.

In a C-SPAN interview Monday, Clinton said the new focus on the uranium deal is "baloney" and evidence that the Trump administration is anxious and trying to deflect attention away from the ongoing probes into the Trump team's alleged ties to the Kremlin. "But one of the things that you know that we're concerned about is whether or not there was an FBI investigation". "We're not going to jump to any conclusions at this time", House Intelligence Chairman Devin Nunes says.

The New York Times reported in 2015 that "as the Russians gradually assumed control of Uranium One in three separate transactions from 2009 to 2013, Canadian records show, a flow of cash made its way to the Clinton Foundation". Russian Federation later assumed full ownership of the company.

Two US House committees will conduct a formal investigation into a 2010 deal that saw 20 percent of America's uranium supply being sold to a Russian mining company, amid accusations that bribes were paid to then Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

Nunes has become a focal point of such efforts before. "That amounts to ten months of abdication of responsibility-a near total failure to question, investigate, or challenge the President or the White House, including on grave allegations of obstruction of justice". The same week he fired Comey, the president told NBC News in an interview that he thought of the "made-up" story about ties to Russian Federation when he fired Comey.

Clinton was not mentioned during the press conference as part of the Russian Federation investigation.

Clinton herself on Monday described the controversy as "baloney" that has "been debunked repeatedly".

Chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, announced the investigation into the deal at a news conference Tuesday.

Ian Prior, a Justice Department spokesman, said the department plans to "fully cooperate with this important congressional investigation".
