Liverpool's Mohamed Salah fires Egypt to World Cup

Liverpool's Mohamed Salah fires Egypt to World Cup

For Egypt to make the World Cup, they will have to pray Ghana beats Uganda in Kampala their next Group E clash on Saturday and then win their clash against Congo on Sunday to qualify.

The last time Egypt reached the World Cup, the tournament featured four countries that don't even exist anymore, such has been the length of their absence.

Congo substitute Arnold Bouka Mouto leveled in the 86th minute with a ferocious left-footed volley that stunned Egypt's goalkeeper Essam el-Hadary.

Just across the border in neighbouring Gaza, where Egypt has led a political reconciliation process, thousands of Palestinians poured into an open-air park to cheer on the second Arab country to qualify for the 2018 World Cup after Saudi Arabia.

After a 0-0 first half, Salah eventually calmed the Egyptian fans nerves by breaking the deadlock in the 63rd minute.

The celebrations nearly got too much for goalkeeper Essam El Hadary. During this drought the Pharaohs have won four Africa Cup of Nations titles (1998, 2006, 2008 and 2010) but they haven't been able to mirror this success in World Cup qualification.

Egypt's coach Hector Cuper has revealed he is ready to face Congo in a major decider despite increasing pressure from nationals for him to prove his worth.

The game looked to be headed for a draw when Egypt were awarded a penalty.
