Mega Millions redesign means bigger jackpots, higher ticket price

Mega Millions redesign means bigger jackpots, higher ticket price

With the higher prices comes a redesigned game in which players select five numbers from one to 70 and one Mega Ball number from one to 25, according to the commission.

The Arkansas Scholarship Lottery announced that winning the Mega Millions is about to have better odds of winning $1 million dollars, higher average jackpots and faster-growing jackpots. Other secondary prizes also are being increased, including players winning $10,000 for matching four white balls and the Mega Ball, an increase of $5,000.

Overall, the chances of winning any prize will be 1 in 24 instead of the current 1 in 15.

Non-jackpot prize payouts will change. But that's worse than the 1 in 14.7 odds that you had in the game than ends Tuesday.

Mega Millions is now offered for sale in 44 states, plus Washington, D.C., and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

The largest jackpot in Mega Millions history was $656 million for the March 30, 2012, drawing. Drawings are Tuesdays and Fridays at 11 p.m. There were three winning tickets in Illinois, Kansas and Maryland.

Mega Millions has been having a hard time competing with Powerball, which raised its ticket prices and lengthened its odds back in October 2015.

And it's the big jackpots that bring lottery buyers into the game.

The $2 ticket price makes it the same price as a Powerball ticket.

The changes come from customers wanting bigger jackpots, according to Mega Millions officials.

The changes will go into effect Saturday.
