Militants attack Egypt police, dozens killed

Militants attack Egypt police, dozens killed

But western diplomats and security officials described the death toll as in the dozens with few militants, if any, being killed.

More anti-terrorism forces have been deployed to the area in an attempt to tackle the militants.

There has not yet been a claim of responsibility.

Islamist militants have launched several major attacks in Egypt this year, most recently targeting churches in Cairo and other cities and causing the loss of dozens of lives.

Egypt has been struggling to contain an insurgency by Islamic militants led by an affiliate of the Islamic State group, centred mostly across the Suez Canal in the northern region of the Sinai Peninsula.

On October 13, the Egyptian army said six soldiers were killed in a "terrorist" gun and grenade attack on a security post near the North Sinai provincial capital of El-Arish.

The public prosecutor has ordered the state security prosecution to start an investigation into the incident, an official said.

In total, 53 members of the security service died, sources told the BBC. The attackers also used explosive devices.

Earlier reports said that 14 police officers were killed and eight others were injured during the clashes.

Sissi's office, though, said he visited El Alamein Military Museum with some of the dignitaries, and gave a speech commemorating the battle and stressing the Middle East "is facing unprecedented crises".

Egyptian authorities on Saturday said two police operations were moving in on a suspected militant hideout on Friday when one of the patrols came under fire from heavy weapons in a remote area around 135 km southwest of Cairo. The Muslim Brotherhood has denied any involvement in violent attacks against security forces.

Al-Arabiya correspondent in Cairo reported on Friday that 16 security forces personnel were killed in clashes with militants in Giza, southwest Cairo.
