No trophy for golf victor, 16, because she is female

No trophy for golf victor, 16, because she is female

Emily Nash won the Central Mass. Division 3 Golf Tournament but won't take home the trophy.

Pearson mentioned that a "good analogy" to describe what happened with Nash would be if there was a team competition on Monday and an individual competition on Tuesday.

The Telegram & Gazette reported Nash's score on Tuesday only counted toward the team's total, which was not enough to qualify for the state tournament.

The tournament director, Kevin Riordan, told The Telegram & Gazette he had made Nash aware of the MIAA rule before the tournament began. And when she finished first, Riordan said he double-checked with MIAA assistant director and golf liaison, Ann Trytko.

The boy who came in second offered to give her the trophy but she declined.

MIAA Statement regarding the D3 Central Boys Golf Tournament The MIAA and its member schools congratulate all golfers on their performance at the recent fall sectional team golf tournament.

The result should have seen her given the opportunity to play at the state high school golf championships.

"The rule prohibits individual girls from moving on from the tournament".

However, despite playing off the same tees and under the same conditions as the boys, and although she was eligible to compete in the event and contribute towards her team's overall score, Nash was denied the trophy on account of being female. Instead, they have their own tournament every spring.

Nash finished fourth in the state girls' tournament last spring as a sophomore.

They can only play in the boys team tournament. Approximately 26 female golfers participated in 2017 fall boys golf tournaments. This seems like a rule that was created to try and be as bureaucratically fair as possible, but wound up being anything but in practice.

Nash was allowed to tee it up against the boys because her school did not sponsor a girls' team for the spring tournament.

"I wasn't aware that if I won I wouldn't get the title or the trophy", she told local TV station WPBF. Nash's father, Bob, had this to say: "I think people feel it was an injustice, and I understand, (but) I think people are more bothered than we are to be quite honest".

"None of us are mad at the MIAA or anything like that, but I was definitely a little bit disappointed".

Emily said she is taking it all in stride.
