Senior diplomats of S. Korea, US to discuss NK nuke issue

Senior diplomats of S. Korea, US to discuss NK nuke issue

Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump met top officials from his National Security team on Tuesday night for a briefing on ways to respond to threats from North Korea, the White House said.

Two U.S. B-1 bombers carried out a training exercise on Tuesday with Japanese and South Korean military aircraft in the vicinity of the Sea of Japan, the U.S. military said, amid growing tension over North Korea's missile and nuclear programs.

"FireEye devices detected and stopped spear phishing emails sent on September 22, 2017, to U.S. electric companies by known cyber threat actors likely affiliated with the North Korean government", the infosec outfit reported on Tuesday.

An unusually aggressive approach to the North by Trump, which has included rhetoric hinting at US strikes and threatening the destruction of North Korea's leadership, has some South Koreans fearful that war is closer than at any time since the Korean War ended in 1953 in a shaky cease-fire, leaving the Korean Peninsula still technically in a state of war. "And I can tell you who is going to win".

The two US Air Force B-1B bombers were joined by two F-15K fighters from the South Korean military after leaving their base in Guam, South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff said in a statement on Wednesday.

However, the South Korean defence ministry has refused to comment about this allegation.

The air-to-ground missile maneuvers near the South Korean coast were intentionally scheduled for North Korea's communist party's anniversary.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un gives field guidance at the Sci-Tech Complex, in this undated photo released by North Korea's Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) in Pyongyang October 28, 2015. But Kim, the third generation of his family to rule, is officially revered in the North, and any suggestion of removing him from power is taken extremely seriously in Pyongyang.

"Thus far, the suspected North Korean actions are consistent with a desire to demonstrate a deterrent capability rather than a prelude to an unprovoked first-strike in cyberspace; however, North Korea linked actors are bold, have launched multiple cyber attacks created to demonstrate national strength and resolve, and have little concern for potential discovery and attribution of their operations", FireEye researchers said in a blog.

Rhee, now a member of the National Assembly's committee for national defence, said about 80 percent of the hacked data has not yet been identified, but that none of the information was expected to have compromised the South Korean military as it was not top classified intelligence.
